Autistic History: Behaviorism

Behaviorism leads to the barbaric practice of ABA. What is behaviorism? Behaviorism is the theory that human and animal behavior can be explained in terms of conditioning, without appeal of thoughts or feelings, that psychological disorders are best treated by altering behavior patterns. It is only concerned with observable stimulus- response behaviors, and says all behaviors are learned through interaction with the environment.

Types of Behaviorism Behaviorism started in 1913 when John Watson write an article called "Psychology as the behaviorist views it." It explained a set number of underlying assumptions regarding methodology and behavior analysis.

The basic assumption were:

1. All behavior is learned from the environment. Behaviorism emphasizes environmental factors playing a role in influencing behavior. It almost excludes innate or inherited factors. This focuses on learning.  It states that we learn new behavior through classical (a learning process that occurs when…

Autistic History: Talk About Curing Autism

Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) is a no for profit that was founded in 2000 by Lisa Ackerman. It started with 10 families in the Ackerman living room.  It is based in Irvine, California. In 2019, they changed their name to The Autism Community In Action. They are not fooling anyone.

TACA often butts heads with the scientific community about treatments and causes. They have had spokespeople for themselves that support Andrew Wakefield (blog post on him to come). Wakefeild falsified findings in a research study that he made say vaccines are linked to autism when they clearly are not.

They have manipulated over 2,100 families.

David Gorski said that TACA is a "group that promotes the idea that vaccines cause autism as well as aadvocates biomedical treatments to 'cure' autism."

Lisa Ackerman has named flame retardant clothing, mattresses, new carpeting and other various nonsense things as causes to our neurology. She advocates for vitamin injections that are not doctor o…

Autistic History: AUT10k or MSSNG project and Parallels to T4 from World War II

The organization we love to hate, Autism Speaks, teamed up with google to create the largest genome data base for autism on June 10, 2014. This was originally called AUT10k. It stands for Autism 10,000 genomes.

Autism Speaks lacks autistic representation. They lack autistic membership on the board. There are only two autistic board members. They do not represent the desires and needs of the autistic community. Autism Speaks research budget ignores inquires focused on improving the lives of autistic people. At the time, there was only 1% of their budget going to family services. They only had .25% paying for adult services. The rest of the budget focuses on wiping us from existence.

Autism Speaks partnered with Google so Google would store this data base on their cloud platform. Autism Speaks has the largest private collection of DNA samples from autistic people. There is over 12,000 samples with detailed phenotyping. Phenotyping is observing characteristics of a individual based on th…

Deaf Civil Rights Parallels Autistic Civil Rights

Cochlear Implant What is the cochlear implant? It is a device that is surgically installed in the cochlea to give a Deaf people sound. It uses electrical impulses to send sound waves to the brain by working around the damaged cochlea, creating a perceived indication of sound to a Deaf person or Hard of Hearing person.
The hearing people rejoiced when this technology was released. They would say this is a victory over the "tragedy of Deafness"and they expected the Deaf community to be very excited.
The Deaf community does not view itself as a group of disabled people. The view is a minority culture group. They have their own language, similar life and cultural experiences. Not being able to hear is not any more different than skin color or religion. The introduction of cochlear implants was well intended by medical professionals but it is viewed as an attack against Deaf culture. Hearing people are trying to enforce their idea of "normal" onto Deaf people. They we…

Autistics are Speaking Out against Tom Clements

I am sure most of you have read the article by the Guardian. Like most of us ,I was very angered by this article. We will dissect it paragraph by paragraph. Almost like a necropsy when I first started veterinary technologist school. The exact words from the article will be in italics so you can follow along.

"The word autism means a lot of different things to different people. To some, it conjures an image of the socially awkward eccentric who, besotted by a narrow set of interests, eschews small-talk and large gatherings in favour of solitude. To others, it’s a profoundly life-limiting disorder that consumes every waking hour of a family’s life, a medical disability that entails unpredictable bouts of aggression resulting in torn upholstery, cracked skulls and savage bites. Severely autistic people have a life expectancy of 36 in the United States and 39.5 in Europe, while their parents and care-givers often experience PTSD and stress similar to that of combat veterans. Mildly au…

Autistic History: Akitoin T4

When you think T4, you think thyroid test. It also has a much darker meaning. This program was called Aktoin T4 program or the T4 Program. T4 stands for Tiergartenstrasse 4.  This was the Nazi's effort, disguised as a euthanasia program, to kill ill, mentally disabled, physically disabled, "emotionally distraught" and elderly people. The word euthanasia means good death.  Adolf Hitler started the program in 1939. It officially ended in 1941 but did not really stop until Nazis were defeated in 1945. This was Nazi Germany's first program of mass killings. They wanted to restore the racial "integrity" of Germany.

During October 1939, Hitler authorized his personal doctor and the chief of the chancellor of the Fuhrer to kill people "unworthy of life." This order was backdated to September 1, 1939. This was the day World War II started. This was to make it appear it was a war time action. Dr. Karl Brandt adn Chancellory Chief Philipp Bouhler were "…

Puzzle Piece is Hated by the Autistic Community: the history and what to use instead

A hate symbol. Why is the puzzle piece a hate symbol? I get asked this a lot. They tell me to reclaim it. As a Holocaust educator, no one tells the Jewish, travelers, LBGTQ, or any other people massacred in this horrific even in history to reclaim the swastika. I am breaking down the history and what to use instead.  The HistoryThe puzzle piece logo was created in 1963 by Gerald Gasson, who was on the board of National Autistic Society in London. It was formally called the Society for Autistic Children.  It featured a crying child in the middle of it.  It symbolizes that autistic people are hard to understand.

Helen Alison from the National Autistic Society explained this by saying,"The puzzle piece is so effective because it tells us something about autism: our children are handicapped by a puzzling condition; this isolates them from normal human contact and they do not 'fit in.' The suggestion of a weeping child is a reminder that autistic people do indeed suffer from thei…

Masking from an Autistic Perspective

Today I had a training for Boy Scouts of America. I am very involved. Seems like it would be no big deal right? You could not be more wrong.

Don't get me wrong. I love my fellow scouters. This is a situation where I have to mask being autistic. What is masking? Masking is having to pretend you are neurotypical. They may know you are autistic but they unknowingly pressure you into acting typical.

Today I had a district committee workshop. I did try to get out of it but I was told it was mandatory.  I knew our district committee was not that large, so I thought I would be safe.

I forgot this training was for the whole council. Five different districts plus the explorers. There were 75 participants. This does not include the people who were running the program.

I sat in the front because I know the limitations of my own attention span. Then someone from the boys troop talked to me. I know her so it was no big deal. She knows my quirks and I did not have to mask so much.

I forced mys…

Modified Keto is Doctor Recommended. How I am handling it.

As many of you know I went to the doctor to have my hormone levels checked to get my PCOS. Much to my surprise all my hormones were in the normal range. They have always been all over the place. The doctor attested that to the hormonal IUD that I have.

The one hormone that is high is insulin. This happens when there is insulin resistance. My A1C was a 5.1. It was perfect. Cholesterol is a bit elevated but it is normal with PCOS.

The doctor made her recommendation. I have to go back on a modified ketogenic diet. I am told this is the ONLY reason a doctor would recommend this diet because it could be dangerous in a normal endocrine system. The ketones cause someone with PCOS to have normal weight regulation along with normalized hormones. I need to do this forever. It will just take getting used to.

I have been on the modified keto diet for about 2 days. So far so good. I do not have many food aversions which is a really good thing for this. The only thing is the headache I get from do…

Review of "Train Your Baby Like a Dog" and comparison to ABA

I am an ABA survivor and a pet professional and I am going to give my take on this show. I am in the United States and a follower was kind enough to send me the video files. This is my comparison in italics.

It opens up telling a little background information about Jo-Rosie, the dog trainer. Next scene you see a toddler being given a command and then given a piece of candy.

This is exactly how they do ABA. This is how they manipulated me into "quiet hands" and eye contact. This is an ABA method.

They then introduced a family with a three year old and the narrator describes their life like a "living hell." They describe the toddler's distress as tantrums. They make the behavior about the parents, not the child at all. He is aggressive and can be dangerous to the rest of the family.

They have Jo-Rosie talk about using the same methods of dog training on their son. She stated that the traditional parenting methods did not make any sense. You then see a scene whe…

JB Handley. You are not FORGOTTEN

J.B. Handley wrote the book "How to End the Autism Epidemic." He maintains that he has found the cure for autism but you have to buy the book to know what it is.

Description from the publishers website:

"In How to End the Autism Epidemic, Generation Rescue’s co-founder J.B. Handley offers a compelling, science-based explanation of what’s causing the autism epidemic, the lies that enable its perpetuation, and the steps we must take as parents and as a society in order to end it. While many parents have heard the rhetoric that vaccines are safe and effective and that the science is settled about the relationship between vaccines and autism, few realize that in the 1960s, American children received three vaccines compared to the thirty-eight they receive today. Or that when parents are told that the odds of an adverse reaction are “one in a million,” the odds are actually one in fifty. Or that in the 1980s, the rate of autism was one in ten thousand children. Today it’s one…
